asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he will issue a general direction to the Air Registration Board to introduce mandatory defect reporting.

No. I see no present need for requirements additional to those already contained in Article 9(5) of the Air Navigation Order, 1970, but am keeping the matter under review and will not hesitate to act if it becomes clear that further legislation would contribute to improved safety.
