asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the minimum element of supplementary benefit being paid to recipients of supplementary benefits to enable them to purchase fuel; and if he will make a statement.

The supplementary benefit scale rates provide for all normal living expenses, including fuel requirements. Since individual needs and preferences vary, it is not possible to apportion an element of the scale rate to the cost of fuel or any other single item of expenditure.
