HC Deb 12 February 1971 vol 811 c271W
Mr. Bishop

asked the Minister for the Civil Service if he is satisfied that there is no discrimination against women in the Civil Service; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. David Howell

Within the non-industrial Civil Service, women receive equal pay and their terms and conditions of service, including their eligibility for promotion, are the same as those of men. There is a very small number of posts from which women are at present excluded because the work is considered unsuitable for them; the reasons for these exclusions are reviewed regularly.

In the industrial Civil Service, there are still certain differences in the treatment of men and women. These differences will all be reviewed as a consequence of the Equal Pay Act.
