§ Mr. Harold Walkerasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why, for the purpose of purchase tax, mirrors, although included under the general heading of furniture are alone charged at 36; per cent., while all other items in the group are either charged at only 13¾ per cent. or not chargeable; and if he will take steps to remove this anomaly.
§ Mr. HigginsMirrors have been taxed at a higher rate than other furniture since 39W 1942. The manufacturers have recently asked for this to be reconsidered, and I shall keep their views in mind during the current review of indirect taxation.
