HC Deb 04 February 1971 vol 810 cc441-2W
Dr. John A. Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many school leavers are currently unemployed in West Cumberland; and what percentage of the total has been unemployed for more than three months.

Mr. Dudley Smith

Of the 24 school leavers who were registered as unemployed in West Cumberland on 11th January, 14—or 58 per cent.—had been unemployed for more than three months.

Dr. John A. Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many school leavers are currently unemployed in the Whitehaven constituency; and what percentage this number represents of all school leavers for last year.

Mr. Dudley Smith

On 11th January, 16 school leavers were registered as unemployed in the area covered by the Cleator Moor, Millom and Whitehaven careers offices, which corresponds broadly to the Whitehaven constituency. This represented approximately 2 per cent. of the young people who left school for employment last year.

Dr. John A. Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many unfilled vacancies exist in the Whitehaven constituency, and in West Cumberland as a whole, at the latest convenient date.

Mr. Dudley Smith

At 6th January, 1971, there were 85 notified vacancies remaining unfilled in the area covered by the Whitehaven, Millom and Cleator Moor Employment Exchanges, which is similar to the Whitehaven constituency. For the area covered by the Aspatria, Cleator Moor, Cockermouth, Maryport, Millom, Whitehaven and Workington Employment Exchanges in West Cumberland, the corresponding figure was 294. The statistics relate only to notified vacancies remaining unfilled and do not purport to measure the total unsatisfied demand for labour.

Dr. John A. Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people were registered as unemployed in the Whitehaven constituency, at the latest convenient date, and how many were men and how many were women.

Mr. Dudley Smith

At 11th January, 1971, there were 1,681 persons—1,234 men, 65 boys, 340 women and 42 girls—registered as unemployed in the area covered by the Whitehaven, Millom and Cleator Moor Employment Exchanges.

Dr. John A. Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of the working population is unemployed in the Whitehaven constituency, and how this compares with the national average.

Mr. Dudley Smith

At 11th January, 1971, the percentage rates of unemployment in the area covered by the White-haven, Millom and Cleator Moor Employment Exchanges, and in Great Britain, were 6.6 and 3.0 respectively. The total numbers registered as unemployed have been expressed as percentages of the estimated numbers of employees, employed and unemployed.
