HC Deb 04 February 1971 vol 810 cc452-3W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Prime Minister whether he will take steps to ensure that chairmen of nationalised boards on a full-time basis of payment shall not undertake paid employment with other concerns, particularly in the field of private industry, and shall not negotiate or accept paid employment with private industry until such time as they have actually relinquished their State employment, on a similar basis to the rules in operation with regard to civil servants.

The Prime Minister

No. I am satisfied that the present arrangements provide adequate safeguards.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Prime Minister under what authority the chairmen of nationalised boards on full-time appointments with full-time salaries are enable to negotiate appointments with private firms and take on paid or unpaid employment with private firms, whilst at the same time maintaining their full-time appointments as chairmen; and whether all chairmen of state boards are entitled to have several appointments.

The Prime Minister

The approval of the Minister concerned must be obtained.
