26. Mr. Strang

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the increase in the number of retirement pensioners claiming supplementary benefit between 31st October, 1970 and 30th November, 1970; and how this figure compares with his Department's estimate of the increase in the number of pensioners eligible for supplementary benefit as a result of the increases in supplementary benefit levels on 2nd November. 1970.

Mr. Dean

The number of retirement pensioners receiving supplementary benefit during November, 1970 increased by about 30,000. This is broadly what was expected in the light of previous increases in supplementary benefit levels.

32. Mr. Thomas Cox

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what percentage of retired people at present drawing State pension is also in receipt of supplementary benefits.

Mr. Dean

In December, 1970 the proportion was 27.7 per cent.
