§ 77. Mr. Pendryasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if, in view of public concern over the Pauline Jones-Denise Weller case, he will consider instigating an inquiry into the likely effects on women offenders who are known to be pregnant or suffering from post-natal depression when remanded in custody or subjected to long prison sentences.
§ Mr. CarlisleThe medical and nursing staff at women's prisons are skilled in treating women who are pregnant or suffering from post-natal depression. Some limited research into the effect of custody on these women has been carried out and my right hon. Friend is considering whether it might usefully be extended.
