§ 43. Mr. Redmondasked the Secretary of State for Employment what steps he has taken to maintain the number of apprentices in industry.
§ Mr. BryanCraft training is primarily the responsibility of industry and of the Industrial Training Boards. My right hon. Friend has urged employers to maintain their recruitment of apprentices. With his encouragement, several training boards have introduced special schemes to enable up to 3,800 more young people to start apprentice training and a further 500 or so opportunities will be created in the New Year. The Government is meeting half the cost of these schemes.
