HL Deb 06 December 1971 vol 326 cc672-3WA
THE EARL OF HARROWBY

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will encourage local authorities to make the elimination, as far as possible, of slight rises, but below the grade of hump, a primary factor in road safety work where approach visibility is hampered for that reason—up to, say, 150/200 yards from a crossroads or important road junction (even accepting the adequacy of the top half of a vehicle as being sufficient): and whether they have total or ratio figures where this factor is the cause of accidents.

THE JOINT PARLIAMENTARY UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE, DEPARTMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT (LORD SANDFORD)

My Lords, with regard to the first part of this Question the answer is, "Yes". This is done by including visibility among the general recommendations concerning the layout of roads. The reports of road accidents included in the central records do not include information on the variation of carriageway level at junctions.
