HC Deb 01 December 1971 vol 827 cc131-2W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what is the state of development of the Biomechanical Research and Development Unit-designed prosthesis, compared with the limb of a similar design prepared by his Department's own limb contractors; if these limbs conform to modular design; what steps have been taken to assist the interchange of components between different countries; and if lie will make a statement;

(2) if he is now in a position to publish in the OFFICIAL REPORT the results of the clinical trials on the work of the Biomechanical Research and Development Unit on modular assembly prosthesis; whether it has been possible to make an evaluation of this work; if there is a chance of this equipment going into production; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Alison

The Biomechanical Research and Development Unit modular leg is currently being clinically appraised. Its development was directed primarily to the establishment of the most satisfactory and effective design. The modular leg currently provided by a contractor satisfies some though not yet all of these design criteria, and offers scope for further development. Meanwhile it is benefiting many patients. At an international meeting in San Francisco in March, 1971, the first steps were taken towards standardisation of components. This was largely abortive because criteria for design had not been established. Arising from this, an international working group organised by my Department is to meet in this country in the autumn of 1972 with the object of seeking to reach agreement on clinical and functional requirements for modular systems.

The Biomechanical Research and Development Unit's modular assembly prosthesis is also being used to identify problems in the local provision of modular limbs without reliance upon centralised manufacturing facilities.

In relation to production. I would refer the hon. Member to my reply to his Question on 26th July.—[Vol. 822, c. 48.]
