Mr. Marten

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how much has been paid out from public funds in the last 12 months for all unemployment benefits, including redundancy payments.

Mr. Bryan

During the 12 months ended 30th June, 1971, the amount paid out from public funds was £293,964,228. In the same period a total of £45,428,000 was paid from the redundancy fund, which is financed entirely by employers' contributions.

Mr. Golding

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how much has been paid out in unemployment benefit in each month since June, 1970.

Figures are not available in monthly form for the period January to March, 1971, because of the introduction of decimal currency on 15th February, 1971. Subject to this qualification, the amount paid out in unemployment benefit in each month since June, 1970, is as follows:
