§ Mr. Redmondasked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) what is the estimated total cost of the schemes on trunk roads not justifying comprehensive improvement to dual carriageway standards required to complement the primary programme in order to eliminate congestion on these non-primary trunk roads;
(2) what will be the estimated total expenditure on the non-primary trunk road schemes by 1980;
(3) if he will break down the figure of £500 million for the total road programme giving respectively the estimated total cost of the revised and intended primary trunk road network.
§ Mr. Graham PageMy right hon. Friend's recent announcement of inter- urban trunk road plans added £500 million worth of major schemes to the trunk road preparation pool. These schemes will be processed as quickly as possible to complete a primary network of some 3,500 miles of strategic trunk routes by the early 1980s. There are now £2,300 million worth of motorway and other trunk road schemes programmed, in preparation or subject to feasibility studies. They include some £200 million worth of individual schemes on other trunk roads which are among those programmed and in preparation. There will in addition be a large number of minor improvement schemes on non-strategy routes.
