According to information in the 1970 edition of "Education in Europe—A Guide to Schools Systems", issued by the Council for Cultural Co-operation of the Council of Europe:

The number in school of all kinds is expected to increase from 9,040,000 in 1972 to 9,900,000 in 1980. Information is as follows:
