Mr. Meacher

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) how many persons, in the last full year for which information is available, were assessed for means-tested assistance in regard to the cases of recuperative holidays or convalescence, loan of nursing equipment, adaptation of home for medical purposes, vitamin supplements and foods and family planning; and what proportion those granted benefit in each case was estimated to be of the total eligible;

(2) how many persons, in the last full year for which information is available, were assessed for means-tested assistance in regard to the costs of meals at home or in centres and clubs for the handicapped, recreational facilities and occupational centres for the handicapped, personal aids and equipment for the handicapped, adaptation of houses for the handicapped, home help for the elderly or handicapped, and chiropody for the elderly or handicapped; and what proportion were those granted benefit estimated to be of the total eligible;

(3) how many persons in the last full year for which information is available were assessed for means-tested assistance in regard to the costs of residential accommodation for the mentally disordered, meals in training and day centres for the mentally disordered, meals at home or in day centres and clubs for the elderly, and recreational facilities for the elderly; and what proportion were those granted benefit estimated to be of the total eligible;

(4) how many persons in the last full year for which information is available were assessed for means-tested assistance in regard to the costs of temporary accommodation for homeless families, residential accommodation for the elderly and handicapped, patients' hospital travelling expenses, day nurseries, and residential accommodation for mothers and babies; and what proportion were those granted benefit estimated to be of the total eligible;

(5) how many persons last year received means-tested assistance in respect of parental contributions to the maintenance of children in care; and what proportion was this total estimated to be of those eligible.
