Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the gross taxable income required for a married couple with two dependent children to produce a net income of £20,000, £40,000 and £60,000, respectively, assuming there is no investment income.

Mr. Higgins

For a married couple with two dependent children not entitled to any other personal allowances and not entitled to any deductions or reliefs for expenditure of any kind the amounts, assuming that the rates of surtax for 1971–72 are the same as for 1970–71, are approximately £62,000, £145,000 and £225,000. for income wholly earned.

Mr. William Hamilton

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the gross taxable income needed to produce a net income of £95,000 for a single person with no other source of income.

For a taxpayer entitled to no personal allowances except that for a single man and not entitled to any deductions or reliefs for expenditure of any kind, the amount, assuming that the rates of surtax for 1971–72 are the same as for 1970–71, is approximately £370,000.
