HC Deb 05 August 1971 vol 822 c450W
Mr. Normanton

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he is aware of the disturbances following the football match on 31st July when Manchester United played Halifax Town; and what steps he proposes to take in the light of them.

Mr. Eldon Griffiths

Yes. I deplore outbreaks of violence of any kind. They have no place whatever at sporting events. Football supporters generally are strongly opposed to the misbehaviour by which a few, at times, can mar the sport of the many. I rely on the good sense of the great majority of football fans to do everything they can to minimise hooliganism by themselves maintaining good humour, forbearance and good sportsmanship.

If, on occasion, disorder unfortunately does occur, all present should keep calm and give prompt help to the police and authorities concerned.
