HC Deb 05 August 1971 vol 822 c357W
Mr. Edwin Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether, in view of the fact that many clinical medical students are in financial difficulties, when from the third year of their course they have to spend an extra 18 weeks on hospital training which reduces the value of their grant from £14 per week to £7 per week, she will make a statement on what action she intends to take to ease the financial difficulties of these students.

Mrs. Thatcher

The increased rates of grant announced on 21st May will benefit these students, many of whom will derive additional benefit from the higher rates of grant for extra study which will be paid to students at institutions in London. Payments for extra study take account of the element in ordinary grants for vacation maintenance and other elements intended to cover 52 weeks' expenditure.
