Mr. St. John-Stevas

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prosecutions for illegal abortion have been carried out in each of the three 12-month periods since the Act came into operation on 27th April, 1968; in how many of these cases have mothers been prosecuted; and what is the average sentence imposed in these cases of imprisonment and of fines, respectively.

Not all the information requested is readily available, but I shall send my hon. Friend as soon as possible such statistics as can be provided.

There were no prosecutions under Section 2(3) of the Abortion Act, 1967, in the period from 27th April, 1968, to 31st December, 1970, the latest date for which statistics are available.
