HC Deb 04 August 1971 vol 822 c316W
53. Mr. Buchan

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate his Department has now made of the effect of the economic measures of 19th July upon Scottish unemployment over the coming winter.

Mr. Higgins

Following the measures announced on 19th July, I expect national output between the first halves of 1971 and 1972 to rise by between 4 and 4½ per cent., leading to a fall in national unemployment before very long. The measures, together with the substantial increase in public works which is planned for Scotland, should have a favourable effect on Scottish unemployment.
