HC Deb 04 August 1971 vol 822 c300W
Mr. Strang

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland where and when he met a deputation from Edinburgh Town Council's Joint Committee regarding the exclusion of the city from the Scottish Development Area; whether it contained a representative of the trade unions; and what reply he gave to the representations made by the delegation.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

On 16th July the Lord Provost of Edinburgh brought, at his request, a deputation to see me in St. Andrew's House. I understand that the deputation included representatives of the Corporation, the Edinburgh and Leith Chambers of Commerce and the Edinburgh and District Local Employment Committee. In reply to the representations by the deputation, I pointed out that the Government had earlier this year ended the exclusion of the major part of the city from the assisted areas and extended intermediate area status to the whole of Edinburgh and that, as a result, very considerable incentives were now available for industrial development in the city.
