asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the purchasing power of the £ sterling compared with 18th June, 1970.

Mr. Higgins

Taking the purchasing power of the £ sterling to be 100p in mid-June, 1970, its purchasing power in mid-March, 1971, the latest date for which information is available, is estimated at about 94p.

This comparison is based on the movement in the General Index of Retail Prices.
