Mr. Sillars

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what is the combined annual turnover of the five largest companies in the United Kingdom in 1970; and how this compares with each year from 1960 to 1969 inclusive.

Information is not available for 1970, nor for years before 1966. The figures relate to Shell Transport and Trading (40 per cent. of the turnover of the Royal Dutch Shell Group), British Petroleum, British-American Tobacco, Imperial Chemical Industries and Unilever Ltd. The turnover of overseas branches and subsidiaries is included, but sales within a group are excluded.
