HC Deb 29 October 1970 vol 805 cc187-8W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Employment whether he will take steps to ensure that all factories, workshops and offices employing 50 people or more have fire drill at least twice in every 12 months.

Mr. Dudley Smith

Where more than 20 people are employed in offices or in certain factories, the occupier is required by law to take effective steps to ensure that all employees are familiar with the means of escape and with the routine to be followed in case of fire. The risk Ls different in varying types of premises, and it would hardly be practicable to specify in the legislation just how often fire drills should take place. My Department does, however, issue publications giving guidance on the subject.
