HC Deb 29 October 1970 vol 805 cc157-8W
39. Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson

asked the Minister of State for Defence whether he will make a statement about the gas canisters washed up on the coast of the Isle of Wight during August.

Mr. Kirk

About 200 6-lb. tins of ferric chloride—a non-toxic substance and not a gas—which has been used for de-scaling in Royal Navy ships, were washed ashore in August. The incident occurred because of the failure to observe standing instructions prior to dumping and disciplinary action is being taken. New arrangements for disposal have now been made and no more stores of this type will be dumped in the sea.

Mr. Judd

asked the Minister of State for Defence whether he will make a statement on recent incidents in which dangerous discarded naval stores have been washed ashore on beaches.

Mr. Kirk

I would refer the hon. Member to the Answer already given to-day to the hon. Member for Waltham-stow, East (Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson).
