HC Deb 29 October 1970 vol 805 cc185-6W
Mr. Hugh Jenkins

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is aware that the laws relating to the employment of children are often broken, that in many cases known to the authorities prosecutions are not undertaken and that in cases successfully prosecuted the fines imposed do not deter offenders; and if he will therefore take urgent steps to deal with the matter.

Mr. Carlisle

The Home Office is already sponsoring a small research project into the employment of schoolchildren, and my right hon. Friend is consulting local education authorities and other interested bodies about the operation of the existing law on this subject. My right hon. Friend will await the outcome of these inquiries before considering whether any action is called for on his part.
