Mr. Carter

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what was the total number of motor vehicles exported in the period January, 1965 to January, 1970 and the period January, 1961 to January, 1965.

Mr. Ridley

Exports of complete new passenger and commercial vehicles (excluding motor cycles, three-wheeled vehicles, dumpers and dump-trucks) in the five years 1965–69 and the four years 1961–64 were respectively 3,766,000 and 2,590,000.

Mr. Carter

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what percentage of the motor vehicle industry is owned by United States companies.

Mr. Ridley

United States companies own about one-third of the net assets of the industry, defined as including businesses mainly engaged in manufacturing cars, commercial vehicles, caravans, motor bodies, engines, and certain other parts and accessories.
