HC Deb 28 October 1970 vol 805 c125W
Mr. Heffer

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what action is being taken to reduce the level of unemployment in the construction industry.

Mr. Peter Walker

The Government have already had talks with the local authority associations on land release, abolished the import deposit scheme, made tax reductions and are introducing a new system of depreciation allowances.

The Government believe that these measures will help to stimulate demand in the industry and alleviate unemployment. There are already signs that this is happening. Building society advances are already at a much higher level than they were under the previous Administration.
