HC Deb 27 November 1970 vol 807 c234W
Mr. Miscampbell

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his latest estimate of the effect of the continuation of British Standard Time upon road accidents; and whether such estimates show a variation in the proportion of such accidents between the North and South of England.

Mr. Eldon Griffiths

The latest estimates of the effect of British Standard Time on road accidents are given in paragraphs 48–56 of the Review of British Standard Time (Cmnd. 4512) published last month. During the period of the experiment, accident statistics show that there was an overall improvement in road casualties during the relevant times of the day but the crude figures of savings of casualties need to be treated with reserve. I am arranging for a summary of a further analysis made by the Road Research Laboratory to be placed in the Library of the House during the next few days.
