HC Deb 26 November 1970 vol 807 cc218-9W
Q12. Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Prime Minister whether he is aware that many Peers are full and part-time members of Government Boards etc. drawing several salaries, and expenses in addition to other sources of income, and that they are able to claim, additionally £6 10s. a day tax free when attending the House of Lords; and whether he will cease this multiplicity of employment and payment so as to reinforce the Government's claim for wage restraint upon the part of lower paid workers.

The Prime Minister

All members of public boards, including Peers, are paid according to the duties they perform and are subject to rules about holding more than one appointment. When Peters attend the House of Lords they may claim reimbursement of actual expenses to a maximum of £6 10s. I see no reason to alter these arrangements.
