HC Deb 26 November 1970 vol 807 c209W
73. Mr. Selwyn Gummer

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the comparative weekly cost of keeping a drug addict in prison, in hospital, and in a hostel run on the lines of Phoenix House in Lewisham.

Mr. Alison

In 1969–70 the average weekly cost of keeping a person in prison (England and Wales) was £21 17s. 5d. and that of an in-patient in a mental illness hospital (England ony) £17 12s. 8d. Separate figures for drug addicts are not available. The weekly cost in Phoenix House would be approximately £19 when it is fully occupied.
