Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what was the annual budget of the Wallingford Hydraulics Research Station for the years 1960, 1965 and 1969, respectively.

Mr. Ridley

For the year 1960–61 the Station's total budget was £466,000; for 1965–66 £461,000 and for 1969–70, £759,000. The total for 1960–61 included unusually heavy expenditure on buildings.

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry how many men and women are employed at Wallingford Hydraulics Research Station; and what were the corresponding figures for 1960.

The total number of staff now employed is 255. In 1960 the number was 175.

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will list the projects concerning Wales, including the details for Flintshire, undertaken at the Hydraulics Research Station, Wallingford, since 1960.

30 projects concerning Wales have been completed since 1960 and there are four current projects, two concerned with the river Severn and two with the river Dee. A complete list is as follows:

  • Rhyl coast protection.
  • River Dee (4 projects).
  • Lynne Vrianne spillway.
  • Mostyn tidal sluicing.
  • East Hoyle bank.

The Hydraulics Research Station is currently studying four projects which concern Wales.

These are: Portskewett power station, Oldbury power station, Connah's Quay power station, River Dee study.
