HC Deb 24 November 1970 vol 807 c63W
Mr. Eadie

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, taking the average salary of teachers in local authority schools as £855 per annum in 1959, what is the equivalent salary today with the same money value.

Mr. Higgins

A sum of £855 in 1959 is equivalent to £1,290 in October, 1970. This estimate is based on the movement in the Consumer Price Index from 1959 to 1969 adjusted by the movement in the Index of Retail Prices during 1970. But no account has been taken of possible different amounts of direct taxation chargeable on such salaries.
