HC Deb 24 November 1970 vol 807 cc81-2W
Mr. Burden

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if fat cattle from Northern Ireland are slaughtered in abattoirs in Scotland; and what steps he takes to ensure that the carcases are not sold as Scotch beef in contravention of the Trade Descriptions Act.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

Yes, enforcement of the Trade Descriptions Act is a matter for the local weights and measures authorities.

Mr. Burden

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will prosecute those traders who are selling as Scotch beef carcases of cattle bred in Northern Ireland and fattened and slaughtered in Scotland in contravention of the Trade Descriptions Act.

Mr. Gordon Campbell

Prosecution would be a matter for the procurator fiscal acting on a complaint from the local weights and measures authority or from some other source.
