Mr. Parkerasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the approximate number of persons of 80 years of age and over in the United Kingdom at the end of September, 1970; what approximate number of these were then receiving supplementary benefits; and what approximate number in that age group who were not receiving supplementary benefits are likely to receive the new pensions.
§ Mr. DeanFigures for September, 1970, are not available but population projections indicate that at the end of December, 1970, the number of persons aged 80 and over in Great Britain will be 1,182,000; of these it is estimated that about 1,040,000 will be receiving retirement pensions and 430,000 supplementary benefit; the latest figure for the number not in receipt of supplementary benefit who have been awarded the new pension is 68,000.
