(2) what steps his Department takes to ensure that no employees of Securicor Limited who are engaged in looking after and escorting persons who are detained for purposes of immigration control have any convictions for crime.

Mr. Sharples

Securicor Limited inform me that they do not employ people who have been convicted of crime. No steps are taken by the Home Office in this matter.

Mr. Clinton Davis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if the Government will make it a condition of their contract with Securicor Limited that their employees who are engaged in looking after and escorting persons who are detained for purposes of immigration control must wear only plain clothes.

Mr. Sharples

No.

Mr. Clinton Davis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many employees of Securicor Limited are engaged in the work of supervising immigrants who are refused admission to this country;

(2) how many employees of Securicor Limited engaged in custodial and welfare tasks in relation to immigrants who are refused entry to this country are employed at each port or airport, respectively.

Mr. Sharples

The numbers vary from time to time according to the demands of the work.

Mr. Clinton Davis

Mr. Sharples

Yes.

Mr. Clinton Davis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department on what basis he satisfies himself that the training afforded by Securicor Limited to their employees engaged in custodial and welfare duties of immigrants refused admission to this country is adequate, in view of the fact that such training is the responsibility of Securicor Limited.

Mr. Sharples

On the basis of experience of satisfactory performance of such duties at London Airport since 1967 and at other ports since July.
