HC Deb 23 November 1970 vol 807 cc4-5W
45. Mr. Roy Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what steps he is taking to make provision to increase the number of staff and to provide for short-stay beds in the accident and emergency department in the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, Monmouthshire.

53. Mr. Abse

asked the Secretary of State for Wales whether he is aware that between 1966 and 1970 the total attendances at the Accident and Emergency Department of the Royal Gwent Hospital have increased from 30,000 new cases to 72,000 cases, and that the lack of short-stay beds in the Department is imposing strains upon the staff and the patients; and whether he will direct the Welsh Hospital Board to provide the annual revenue cost to provide a temporary building containing such beds.

Mr. Peter Thomas

I am aware that attendances at this department have increased though by no means to the extent suggested. The Welsh Hospital Board and the Hospital Management Committee are considering the staffing and other requirements of the department.
