HC Deb 23 November 1970 vol 807 c2W
Mr. Kinnock

asked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications if he will give a general direction to the Post Office to exempt voluntary and charitable societies from increased postal charges.

Mrs. Sally Oppenheim

asked the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications if he will give a general direction to the Post Office to exempt charities from the new postal charges.

Mr. Chataway

No. This would in the first instance be a matter for the Post Office and the Post Office Users' National Council and a general direction would not be appropriate. I am afraid I would see difficulty about nationalised industries being used in this way to assist private charities at the expense of their customers in general.
