Mr. John Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is his estimate of the number of deaths which occurred as a result of influenza during the last five years.

Mr. Alison

The numbers of deaths in England and Wales assigned to Influenza (ICD (8th Revision) Nos. 470–474) as the underlying cause were as follows: 1965 809; 1966 3,644; 1967 883; 1968 4,652; 1969 (provisional) 4,734.

Mr. John Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what estimate he has made of the man hours lost in industry due to influenza over the five years from 1964.

Mr. Dean

The Department has information only about days of sickness notified for national insurance purposes. The number of such days attributed to influenza in the years in question is given below. The figures relate to statistical years, beginning on the first Monday in June.
