HC Deb 23 November 1970 vol 807 cc27-8W
Mr. Michael McNair-Wilson

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he intends to introduce legislation to reduce the use of phosphates in detergent formulations.

Mr. Peter Walker

The effects of the substances in synthetic detergents on water pollution are kept under review by the Standing Technical Committee on Synthetic Detergents which publishes annual reports. The Committee thoroughly examined the effects of phosphates, and have not recommended any reduction of their proportion in detergents.
