HC Deb 20 November 1970 vol 806 c500W
Mr. Spence

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the total number of persons in England and Wales who were over 80 years of age on 5th July, 1970; and what proportion of this total he estimates will qualify for the pension for the over 80's.

Mr. Dean

The number of persons in England and Wales who were over 80 years of age on 5th July, 1970 is approximately 1,085,000. About 9 per cent. of this number will qualify for pensions under Section 1 of the National Insurance (Old persons' and widows' pensions and attendance allowance) Act, 1970.
