HC Deb 18 November 1970 vol 806 cc444-5W
Mr. Tom Boardman

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the variation in the staffing by medical practitioners of the Casualty Department of the Leicester Royal Infirmary averaged over the last period of 12 months for which figures are available, compared with the preceding period of 12 months.

Mr. Alison

In the past two years the complement of one medical assistant and six senior house officers, shared with the orthopaedic department, with some general practitioner sessional help, has been unchanged. In the last 12 months the staffing has been adversely affected when posts falling vacant could not be immediately filled, and by sickness. The staffing is now being strengthened. The Sheffield Regional Hospital Board has just authorised two additional senior house officer posts, and it is planned also to make additional consultant time available when a new post in orthopaedic surgery, which will soon be advertised, is filled.

Mr. Tom Boardman

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what was the number of casualties treated in Leicester Royal Infirmary during the last 12 months for which figures are available; and what were the comparable figures for the preceding period of 12 months.

Mr. Alison

During the year ended 31st December, 1969, 82,050 new patients attended and total attendances were 110,775. Comparable figures for 1968 were 77,033 and 104,915.
