HC Deb 18 November 1970 vol 806 cc432-3W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why he will not seek powers to review the payment of the six and a half guineas a day tax-free attendance allowance paid to Members of the House of Lords, so that this is only paid on a means test basis of proved personal need, and where full-time attendance is given to the Upper House.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

I do not consider that it would be appropriate to change the current basis on which Peers are entitled to claim reimbursement of their expenses incurred in attending sittings of the House within the maximum of £6 10s.
