HC Deb 17 November 1970 vol 806 c361W
44. Sir C. Bossom

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he is satisfied with the way calves exported to Belgium are being handled and are being slaughtered; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether he will make a statement on the visit to Brussels on Monday, 9th November by officials of his department to investigate allegations of cruelty to calves in Belgian slaughterhouses exported from Great Britain; and to what extent Great Britain's entry into the European Economic Community will affect the regulations regarding humane methods of slaughter in the countries of the Six.

Mr. Anthony Stodart

My right hon. Friend is inquiring urgently into the allegations about calves exported to Belgium. As soon as the inquiry has been completed he will inform the House.
