asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many midwives are employed in Wales and East Flintshire, respectively, in the public service; what steps he is taking to increase the number of trainees and to relieve the shortage; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Thomas

1,210 for Wales and 89 for the whole of Flintshire at 30th September, 1969. Separate figures for East Flintshire are not available. Recruitment of trainees is a matter for the hospital authorities concerned.
