HC Deb 16 November 1970 vol 806 cc309-10W
Mr. J. H. Osborn

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what special provision he has made to mitigate the drought in Lesotho.

Mr. Wood

I have approved a total of £130,000 in special expenditure to meet the administrative, transport and storage costs of the emergency feeding programme, to enable "food for work" projects to be continued this year and to meet ploughing costs. Normal development expenditure of £200,000 on projects associated with drought and famile relief has also been agreed.

Mr. J. H. Osborn

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what will now be the revised estimate for aid to Lesotho; and how this compares with the original estimate for the current year.

Mr. Wood

Budgetary aid for 1970–71 remains at the original figure of £1.175 million. Because development expenditure was interrupted until the resumption of aid at the end of July, development aid has been reduced from the original offer of £1.5 million to £850,000. The full range of British technical assistance is available.
