HC Deb 16 November 1970 vol 806 cc328-9W
Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he is aware that all petrol companies have recently raised the price of fuel oils whilst at the same time giving unwanted gifts to motorists; and whether he will introduce legislation to ensure that where surplus monies and profits are available these should be passed on to the consumer in lower basic prices rather than in the issuing of gifts.

Mr. Ridley

No. Distributors have to pay for "gifts". They are not obliged to handle them and motorists who do not want "gifts" are free to take their custom elsewhere.

Mr. Arthur Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he is aware that petrol prices are to increase again in January 1971, with consequent effect on home heating and diesel fuels for buses and lorries; and if, in view of the fact that this will represent a 3d. a gallon increase in six months, he will take action to prevent this increase, if need be by introducing legislation.

Mr. Ridley

I am not prepared to speculate on the future course of oil prices.
