HC Deb 16 November 1970 vol 806 cc343-4W
Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if she will indicate the amount of money spent by the Arts Council in Wales and in Flintshire, respectively, in 1969; what changes are proposed in the 1971 budget of the Arts Council in Wales; and if she will make a statement.

Mr. van Straubenzee

The grant to the Welsh Arts Committee in 1969–70 was £568,000 out of a total grant to the Arts Council of Great Britain of £8,200,000. Information is not readily available about direct expenditure in individual Welsh counties. Flintshire is within the area covered by the North Wales Association for the Arts which in 1969–70 received a subsidy of £40,000 from the Welsh Arts Council. I cannot anticipate a decision on the total grant to the Arts Council of Great Britain in 1971–72. It will be for the Council to determine what proportion of this grant will be made available to the Welsh Arts Council.
