of St. Cross, and the Department is now studying the Birmingham Regional Hospital Board's proposals to re-develop this hospital to provide 376 beds (224 acute, 112 geriatric and 40 maternity), and supporting services at an estimated cost of £3,800,000.
The next stage of development is planned to provide 40 maternity beds and 128 acute beds with other services including new boilers, ante-natal clinic and pharmacy, and on its completion the board envisages that St. Luke's Hospital, Rugby, and St. Mary's Hospital at Harborough Magna will no longer be required for their present use. It will be for the board, which has the primary responsibility for planning hospital services in its region, to decide when a start can be made on the scheme, in the light of the amount of money allocated to it for capital expenditure and the many competing demands upon its resources.
