HC Deb 13 November 1970 vol 806 c278W
Mr. Elystan Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the average net increase in the total number of police officers in England and Wales for the financial years 1965–66 to 1969–70; and what is his estimate of the net increase or decrease for 1970–71.

Mr. Sharples

The increase in strength in each of the financial years 1965–66 to 1969–70 was 3,232, 2,778, 3,665, 506 and 851, an average of 2,206. I hope that the net increase for the financial year 1970–71 will be about double that achieved in the financial year 1969–70.
